Notes:
1) All standard VGA boards provide all VGA modes in addition to emulating EGA
and CGA graphics and MDA (mono text). Some of the new boards also emulate
Hercules mono graphics as well as having their own "extended VGA" modes. This
chart assumes standard VGA (VGA, EGA, CGA, MDA) compatibility, and will only
note the extended compatibilities.
2) Some of the early VGA boards are not completely compatible with IBM's VGA
standard at the hardware (register) level, but emulate VGA at the software
(BIOS) level, instead. This may cause problems with some applications which
use the missing registers, so I will note whether boards are "register" or
"BIOS" compatible, when I can find that information. (Some claim to be
register compatible, but -- like the VEGA VGA, Everex EVGA and the Orchid
Designer -- are apparently not fully so. Designing these things isn't easy,
and the competition to get boards on the market fast is fierce, so don't trust
spec sheets!)
3) Most if not all of the boards listed come with "drivers" -- software
-More-
allowing the boards to be used with various software packages. I'm not listing
the included drivers. Please check with vendors for the latest list. I am not
sure whether such drivers are needed for standard VGA useage with the listed
software, or are for controlling the VGA cards in "extended" modes. Drivers are
very important.
4) All of the VGA and extended VGA cards in this chart have an "analog" output
to monitors. (Analog signals allow a much greater number of colors.) Such an
output cannot be used with simple EGA "TTL" monitors, but generally require
more expensive analog monitors of the "multisynch" variety. Generally, the
highest resolutions require the most expensive monitors. Most of the listed
cards also include a TTL port, yet an EGA monitor will still not work with them
at more-than-EGA resolution or color palettes, and might be damaged in the
attempt. I have no list of which monitors will work with which resolutions.
If anyone can give me such information, I'll include it here.
5) Not listed: Zenith Z449 so-called VGA board ($499), because it has no 256-
color mode (VGA mode 13H). Also not listed: any "extended EGA" board claiming
to emulate "some" (but not all) VGA modes. Such claims should be placed where
little sun doth shine.
6) Prices listed are the usual jacked-up "suggested retail prices." You could
probably find many of these boards (assuming you could find them anywhere) for
-More-
MUCH less, especially via mail-order houses.
7) This chart is compiled with information mainly from the March 1988 issue of
Personal Computing magazine, and with additional information from the March
1988 issue of Byte magazine. Yet more of this data comes from tsunami b b s's
helpful Members, the sysop's fertile imagination, and other sources of rumor,
misinformation, half-truths and gold-plated lies.
8) Any errors found in this chart were deliberately placed there to confound
the innocent and get one-up on the guilty.
Please help with corrections and updates!

Hello there!.................................................................
Thanks for bearing the strain with trying to log on here! ESPECIALLY since the
TRAFFIC here was getting VERY heavy. I was taking on more users than the one
line could handle. Right now with the hardware I have purchased the upgrade
path is clearly defined now. I just add a modem and a phone line and more
access is achieved!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the present the numbers are as follows:..................................
213 734 3301 - thats the line you have been calling .........................
213 734 6119 - New phone number..............................................
213 734 5732 - another new number............................................
ALL lines are running at 2400 baud for your quick access
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once a day, I will have a 'External Event' invoked by the TBBS system. The
external event is merely a timer that will shut down the system at a determined
hour for whatever purpose. I will have it do this around 11:30pm PST so that I
can login newusers as well as uninstall expirees on the 1st and 15th every
-More-
month. Sometimes the system may be down because I will backup the system via
tape to insure that any problems arise there is a recent copy to resusitate the
system back to normality.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, well I have said enough and if you have any comments or suggestions
please do not hesistate to send them up via a message. Oh yeah.... DOWNLOAD
protocol? Okay I am WORKING on that one! Give me a break! HEHEH!! Yeah, there
is a patch to work in KERMIT and ZMODEM into TBBS. I have to check into them at
a later date. Okay, thats about it!
